Scientists and fisheries managers rely on catch data to manage fish populations. However, traditional survey methods are expensive and time consuming, so thousands of waterbodies are never monitored. The MyCatch web and smartphone app aims to change that by offering anglers a way to share catch data with scientists, without giving away their honey holes.
Created by Angler’s Atlas, MyCatch allows anglers to track their fishing trips and catches, and confidentially share this info with fisheries biologists, who can use it in their research. In this episode, Blue Fish producer/host Lawrence Gunther talks to Angler’s Atlas CEO Sean Simmons (above) about the possibilities and promise of this kind of citizen science.
